Abstract Voice activated artificial agents are becoming increasingly

prominent in homes across the globe. There has been much research on the natural anthropomorphization of embodied conversational agents but we are interested to what degree this happens to non-embodied conversational agents. In this study, we take on a value sensitive design approach to understand key values, value tensions, benefits and harms surrounding the interactions of Amazon Alexa. We analyzed product reviews, online forums and conducted stakeholder interviews to be able to understand to what degree users have anthropomorphized this new technology. The results of this study show that the natural anthropomorphization designed by Alexa is not reflected in the ideas and opinions of Alexa stakeholders. We also open up four different design spaces for future implications of this device.
