| Articulations of WikiWork + | Successful online communities have complex cooperative arrangements, articulations of work, and integration practices. They require technical infrastructure to support a broad division of labor. Yet the research literature notably lacks empirical studies that detail which types of work are valued by participants in an online community. A content analysis ofWikipedia barnstars – personalized tokens of appreciation given to participants – reveals a wide range of valued work extending far beyond simple editing to include social support, administrative actions, and types of articulation work. Our analysis develops a theoretical lens for understanding how wiki software supports the creation of articulations of work. We give implications of our results for communities engaged in large-scale collaborations + |

| Finding Patterns in Behavioral Observations by Automatically Labeling Forms of Wikiwork in Barnstars + | Our everyday observations about the behaviors of others around us shape how we decide to act or interact. In social media the ability to observe and interpret others’ behavior is limited. This work describes one approach to leverage everyday behavioral observations to develop tools that could improve understanding and sense making capabilities of contributors, managers and researchers of social media systems. One example of behavioral observation is Wikipedia Barnstars. Barnstars are a type of award recognizing the activities of Wikipedia editors. We mine the entire English Wikipedia to extract barnstar observations. We develop a multi-label classifier based on a random forest technique to recognize and label distinct forms of observed and acknowledged activity. We evaluate the classifier through several means including use of separate training and testing datasets and the by application of the classifier to previously unlabeled data. We use the classifier to identify Wikipedia editors who have been observed with some predominant types of behavior and explore whether those patterns of behavior are evident and how observers seem to be making the observations. We discuss how these types of activity observations can be used to develop tools and potentially improve understanding and analysis in wikis and other online communities. + |

| Hardware Companions? – What Online AIBO Discussion Forums Reveal about the Human-Robotic Relationship + | In this study, we investigated people's relationships with AIBO, a robotic pet, through 6,438 spontaneous postings in online AIBO discussion forums. Results showed that AIBO psychologically engaged this group of participants, particularly by drawing forth conceptions of technological essences (75%), life-like essences (49%), mental states (60%), and social rapport (59%). However, participants seldom attributed moral standing to AIBO (e.g., that AIBO deserves respect, has rights, or can be held morally accountable for action). Our discussion focuses on how robotic pets (now and in the future) may (a) challenge traditional boundaries (e.g. between who or what can possess feelings), (b) extend our conceptions of self, companionship, and community, and (c) begin to replace interactions with live pets. We also discuss a concern that people in general, and children in particular, may fall prey to accepting robotic pets without the moral responsibilities (and moral developmental outcomes) that real, reciprocal companionship and cooperation involves. This research contributes to a growing literature on the human-robotic relationship. + |

| Talk Before You Type: Coordination in Wikipedia + | Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, has attracted attention both because of its popularity and its unconventional policy of letting anyone on the Internet edit its articles. This paper describes the results of an empirical analysis of Wikipedia and discusses ways in which the Wikipedia community has evolved as it has grown. We contrast our findings with an earlier study and present three main results. First, the community maintains a strong resilience to malicious editing, despite tremendous growth and high traffic. Second, the fastest growing areas of Wikipedia are devoted to coordination and organization. Finally, we focus on a particular set of pages used to coordinate work, the "Talk" pages. By manually coding the content of a subset of these pages, we find that these pages serve many purposes, notably supporting strategic planning of edits and enforcement of standard guidelines and conventions. Our results suggest that despite the potential for anarchy, the Wikipedia community places a strong emphasis on group coordination, policy, and process + |

| Voice Conversational Agents: A Value Sensitive Approach + | Voice activated artificial agents are becoming increasingly prominent in homes across the globe. There has been much research on the natural anthropomorphization of embodied conversational agents but we are interested to what degree this happens to non-embodied conversational agents. In this study, we take on a value sensitive design approach to understand key values, value tensions, benefits and harms surrounding the interactions of Amazon Alexa. We analyzed product reviews, online forums and conducted stakeholder interviews to be able to understand to what degree users have anthropomorphized this new technology. The results of this study show that the natural anthropomorphization designed by Alexa is not reflected in the ideas and opinions of Alexa stakeholders. We also open up four different design spaces for future implications of this device. + |
